Glowing: A Landmark Light Installation by Nils-R. Schultze

Revolutionizing Energy Display through Art and Technology

Unveiling the unique light installation, "Glowing," by Nils-R. Schultze. This design, inspired by old neon lights, showcases the energy levels of a power plant in an artistic and interactive manner, marking the borderline of the Science Park Adlershof.

Derived from the classic allure of neon lights, Nils-R. Schultze's "Glowing" is a low-tech LED installation that transforms the technical aspect of energy display into an artistic spectacle. The installation, towering at 25m high and spanning 40m wide, is strategically placed around the water reservoirs of the BTB Power Plant at the Science-Park Adlershof. This monumental light installation serves as a landmark, indicating the boundary of the science park.

The unique feature of "Glowing" lies in its dual functionality. In its standard mode, the installation displays the energy levels within the reservoirs. As the reservoirs heat up, the colors of the installation change, providing a visual representation of the energy stored within. This innovative design not only informs but also adds aesthetic value to the power plant.

For special events, "Glowing" transforms into a dynamic light installation. Each ring of light can be individually controlled, creating a mesmerizing display of colors and patterns. This interactive mode can be operated through a multitouch screen, allowing it to sync with music and serve as a sound installation. It can also display pre-fabricated films, further enhancing its versatility.

The realization of "Glowing" was achieved through the use of RGB-LED controlled by DMX-technology and special computer software. The design faced several challenges, including the need for a strong, simple design reminiscent of old neon advertising lights, the requirement for the installation to be demountable without leaving traces on the tanks, and the goal of creating a landmark for the Science Park.

Despite these challenges, "Glowing" was successfully implemented and has been recognized for its innovative design. It was awarded the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.

In conclusion, "Glowing" is a testament to the power of design in transforming technical data into an interactive and artistic experience. It serves as a symbol of the ecological revolution, reminding viewers of the importance of sustainable energy sources. Nils-R. Schultze's innovative design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the Science-Park Adlershof but also communicates the value of ecological energy in a visually engaging manner.
